Family Relationships

IT'S THE END OF AUGUST...HIGH SCHOOL BEGINS IN TWO WEEKS...EIGHT TEENS CRAM
INTO AN SUV AND TAKE A MIDNIGHT JOYRIDE.
They're friends just wanting a last
moment of independence before returning to the grind: victimless, harmless, and
fun. Somebody's friend dies.

Simply a series of choices, and now...what's left behind? Who's to blame?
Accountability? Where's forgiveness? The pain cuts deep. How do you heal in the
midst of such tragedy? Or maybe the question to ask is...will you heal?

Like teens across America, 16-year-old twin Sarah had parents who cared,
attended a good school and lived in a small safe community. And yet, life
carries no guarantees. Told through the eyes and heart of Sarah's mother,
Heaven's Child is a searing memoir that grapples with life and death and social
issues, forcing readers to take stock of their lives and the people and things
that give them meaning.

It's that unforgettable true story that will warm your heart as it
scratches your soul. Heaven's Child will remain with you for a long, long time.

Family Relationships

“TMI Mom is LOLZOMG.a{umlaut} From scorching her hoo-hah with jalapeños to attempting Carmen Electra’s Aerobic Striptease in torn sweats and tube socks to her frustrated desire to pour tequila on her cereal when her kids say, ‘I’m booooooooored!,’ Heather Davis serves up hilarious tales of family-life insanity that are never mean (except when skewering herself) and never leave the reader screaming, ‘I’m boooooooored!’ TMI Mom FTW!” — Linda Erin Keenan, author of Suburgatory

"From behind her shower door to her wide-open minivan door, as-seen-on-TV humorist Heather Davis riffs on the truly TMI of marriage and children."
— Ann Imig, Stay-At-Home Humorist

“Heather Smith Davis is so funny that if she were in my book club, we might not even need wine. Maybe. Davis invites you into her little corner of the heartland with heart and humor and a heaping portion of over sharing. How much information is too much for the Ultimate TMI Mom? Two words: drip dry. Even I wouldn't write about that.”
— Lela Davidson, Who Peed on My Yoga Mat

“Heather Davis would tell you if those pants made you look fat, then invite you out for cheesecake.”
— Dani Stone, author of “Next Left”

Ever wished you could say what you were really thinking? TMI Mom Heather Davis does just that. With her trademark dry wit and knack for storytelling, TMI Mom goes where no mom has been (at least in the pages of a book), with stories about the crazy things that can happen — in the minivan, the bedroom, and out in the big, bad world.

A sampling of the essays in Oversharing:
"My Bladder is Out to Get Me Or The Story Overshared on National Television"; "Open Up! It's the Police!"; "Not Much Has Changed Since I was Eight"; "This One Time? At Vegas?"; "Craziest Things I've Heard in Bed"; "Socks Will be the End of the World"; "Someone Stop the Bleeding"; "An Ill-prepared Family Drip Dries" and more hilarity perfect for the toilet, the pick-up line or your book club. Your choice.

Excerpt:

Things Overhead in the Waiting Room of the Pediatrician’s Office
(Strangely enough, these words comfort me)

From another momma after snapping her flip phone shut: “Ronald? Did you unplug the refrigerator at home?”
Random child with green snot dripping from her nose sitting way too close to my child: “Then my momma opened the box to dinner and popped it in the microwave.”
Random child sitting beside me seemingly belonging to no one: “Do you wear pajamas? Because my momma and daddy don’t always wear pajamas at night in bed.”
Random child with ripped shirt and dirty fingernails: “We used to have a dog and I tied him to the swing set so he could swing with me, but then when the gate was left open when I dragged the spare tire to the back yard, he got out and I haven’t seen him since.”
Random child with no shoes on: “Sometimes when my momma is up late at night and too tired, she gets silly and wears only an apron and dusts my dad with a feather duster.”
Random child hand-fishing in the aquarium: “I don’t know why my momma was so mad—all I did was pee in her bed.”
Random child emerging from the bathroom, probably after NOT washing his hands: “My brother and I are having a contest in our bathroom to see how long we can go without flushing the toilet.”
From another momma who is holding her cellphone to her chest: “Tabitha? Daddy wants to know if you dumped the dish soap in the washing machine.”
Random child sitting crisscross-applesauce right in front of me: “I’m not wearing any underwear today because my momma said to put on my pants and shirt, but she didn’t say underwear.”
Random child playing with the free lotion samples: “My momma always cleans the kitchen before she goes to bed, but in the morning, there are always two big, long glasses in the sink.”

It took a terrible loss for the family to regroup, and all the love Emily can muster to save her siblings.

Sarah's dream was to live in a valley. This might be an elusive dream for a young girl who, along with her brother Frank were orphaned early in life. Their parents died on the way to California in the early 1800's. Sarah and Frank were the only wagon survivors. How would two children survive the highwaymen, the raging grassfires, the cold winters and heartache?

(Many words in this story reflect the times. e.g. From the late 1600's until the late 1800's, soldiers used an iron shell filled with pitch that burned at intense heat. It was called a carcass. The United States ordnance manual of 1861 lists carcasses).

Family Relationships

It was the 1950s, a time of calm, a time when all things were new and everything seemed possible. A few years before, a noble war had been won, and now life had returned to normal.

For one little boy, however, life had become anything but "normal."

To all appearances, he and his family lived an almost idyllic life. The father was a respected professor, the mother a witty and elegant lady, someone everyone loved. They were parents to three bright, smiling children: two boys and a girl. They lived on a sunny street in a small college town nestled neatly in a leafy valley. They gave parties, hosted picnics, went to church—just like their neighbors. To all appearances, their life seemed ideal. But it was, in fact, all appearances.

Lineage, tradition, making the right impression—these were matters of great importance, especially to the mother. But behind the facade this family had created lurked secrets so dark, so painful for this one little boy, that his life would never be the same.

It is through the eyes of that boy—a grown man now, revisiting that time—that we see this seemingly serene world and watch as it slowly comes completely and irrevocably undone.

Beautifully written, often humorous, sometimes sweet, ultimately shocking, this is a son's story of looking back with both love and anger at the parents who gave him life and then robbed him of it, who created his world and then destroyed it.

As author Lee Smith, who knew this world and this family, observed, "Alcohol may be the real villain in this pain-permeated, exquisitely written memoir of childhood—but it is also filled with absolutely dead-on social commentary of this very particular time and place. A brave, haunting, riveting book."

Family Relationships

"I despise you Judith Ann, I curse the day we adopted you and your brother! We owe you nothing because you are nothing," said Mother as saliva pooled at the corners of her mouth.
She began to viciously punch her daughter about the face and head, that unprovoked outburst, resulted from nothing other than seeing her young 7 year old daughter in 'her' home. Exasperated as Mother was almost every single day.

"Go ahead say it Judith Ann," and with that my clue was given, "I know Mother, I know I deserve nothing because I am nothing, and I am worth even less than that."

I said it as vehemently as one tells a child they're loved. My older adopted brother Jimmy, was in for it next. Although Mother never quite gave it to him in the same way. That didn't mean Jim was off the hook, for that same evening Father would begin his violent alcohol induced rages that may land him bleeding and slumped in the corner of his own bedroom.

That was only the beginning of that evening's terror, as Father would come to me next... This was our life, for no more than after we were adopted as mere babies, Mother went on to have two biological children, her beloved son and daughter. The doctor's admonition that conception would never occur, was certainly incorrect. Jim and I spent a lifetime paying for that physician's transgression.

Judy's physical damage required over 10 surgeries to repair 'years old' bodily damage discovered in early adulthood where doctor upon doctor inquired, "how did this happen, who did this to you!"

Unfortunately for Jimmy, a once bright and gifted straight A student, life since age 18 has him confined to mental facilities, never having the ability to live on his own. This is due to Jim's violent propensity to lash out in society, copying the abhorrent behavior Father unleashed at him for thirteen plus years.  Unlike most child abuse stories, the abuse did not stop at age 18. What sets this story apart is Mother and Father's extreme self-righteous belief that in exchange for adopting them, a lifetime of repayment is required

And payback is a real bitch.

Family Relationships

Mothers of children with special needs feel guilt, sadness, and joy simultaneously, which is hard to understand. The mothers in this anthology don't seek pity; instead, they illustrate a complexity of emotions that start with diagnosis, explore care in both early and later years, and invite us to witness the aftermath of too-early deaths of their children. Weaving together essays, poems, and graphics by mothers of children with a wide range of disabilities, Jones and Whiteacre have edited a collection that highlights the challenges and joys of motherhood, exposing both fears and guilty pleasures as mothers explore their relationships with their children, partners, families, caregivers, educators, and the medical community. "An exceptional compilation of writings. This is very important reading for educators, physicians, therapists and anyone who works with families of children with special needs. It will make us laugh and make us cry. And most importantly, it will open our eyes and help us to understand and support more effectively." - Dr. Ina Whitman, Neonatologist, St. Vincent Women's Hospital "In Monday Coffee & Other Stories of Mothering Children with Special Needs, the authors deal with severe hardships generated by children who suffer from debilitating conditions that require constant care and a society in general that grows less inclined - or financially able if you prefer political correctness over truth - to help. They all deal with the guilt, frustration, anger, and pain this struggle causes. Each mother has learned to do that in her own way and has become stronger. What these narratives share with us, as readers, is a sense of hope translated into language through the grace of the actions that created the words. Do humanity a favor and contribute to a worthy enterprise by buying this book. Do yourself a favor by reading it." -Jim McGarrah, award-winning author of A Temporary Sort of Peace and Breakfast at Denny's "'Special parents aren't chosen, they're made' says Ann Bremer in an essay from this remarkable book. Forged is more like it, or annealed perhaps, in a crucible you cannot comprehend unless you, too, have been the parent of a child with Autism, or Down Syndrome, or Cerebral Palsy, or any of the other conditions gathered under the currently-popular sobriquet of 'special needs.' These haunting essays and poems returned me to the early, dark time of my son's birth and diagnosis, before I picked my cautious way, as these authors do, through the ruins of a naïve dream of the perfect, golden family back into gratitude for the families that we have. There is no Pollyanna hope in this honest, raw book, but the writing resonates with complex emotions that transcend despair. I came away with empathy and admiration for the fierce faith and fortitude of these mothers, who remind me of those in support groups I joined and founded when my son was in grammar school. While other parents fretted over invitations to parties and college applications, we wondered things like, will my child ever say the word 'Mom'? Who will care for him when I am gone? Who will pay for that? Who will love him? Or, even, will my child still be alive the fall of his or her senior year? And yet, somehow, we go on. We go on by learning to re-frame our visions of perfection. And we go on, too, because we have each other. And we have books like this one, to remind us with power and grace how to endure what we sometimes fear we cannot." -Rebecca Foust, award-winning author of God, Seed, All That Gorgeous Pitiless Song, and a new manuscript shortlisted for the Dorset and Kathryn A. Morton prizes

Family Relationships

Children need love.  Parents need respect.

It is as simple and complex as that!

When frustrated with an unresponsive child, a parent doesn’t declare, “You don’t love me.” Instead the parent asserts, “You are being disrespectful right now.” A parent needs to feel respected, especially during conflicts. When upset a child does not whine, “You don’t respect me.” Instead, a child pouts, “You don’t love me.” A child needs to feel loved, especially during disputes.

But here’s the rub: An unloved child (or teen) negatively reacts in a way that feels disrespectful to a parent. A disrespected parent negatively reacts in a way that feels unloving to the child.  This dynamic gives birth to the FAMILY CRAZY CYCLE.

So how is one to break out of this cycle? Best-selling author Emerson Eggerichs has studied the family dynamic for more than 30 years, having his Ph.D. in Child and Family Ecology. As a senior pastor for nearly two decades, Eggerichs builds on a foundation of strong biblical principles, walking the reader through an entirely new way to approach the family dynamic. For instance, God reveals ways to defuse the craziness with our children from preschooler to teen, plus how to motivate them to obey and how to deal with them when they don’t. In the Bible, God has spoken specifically to parents on how to parent. This book is about that revelation.

Finding Our Families: A First-of-Its-Kind Book for Donor-Conceived People and Their Families
Wendy Kramer (Author), Naomi Cahn (Author)

New!: $18.00 $13.50 (as of 11/06/2013 09:59 PST)

Family Relationships

The first comprehensive book that offers invaluable step-by-step advice for families with donor-conceived children.

Wendy Kramer, founder and director of the Donor Sibling Registry, and Naomi Cahn, family and reproductive law professor, have compiled a comprehensive and thorough guide for the growing community of families with donor-conceived children. Kramer and Cahn believe that all donor-conceived children’s desire to know their genetic family must be honored, and in Finding Our Families, they offer advice on how to foster healthy relationships within immediate families and their larger donor family networks based on openness and acceptance.
With honesty and compassion, the authors offer thoughtful strategies and inspirational stories to help parents answer their own, and their children’s, questions and concerns that will surely arise, including:

  • How to support your children’s curiosity and desire to know about their ancestry and genetic and medical background.
  • How to help children integrate their birth story into a healthy self-image.
  • How to help your children search for their donor or half siblings if and when they express interest in doing so.
Finding Our Families opens up the lives of donor-conceived people who may be coping with uncertainty, thriving despite it, and finding novel ways to connect in this uncharted territory as they navigate the challenges and rewards of the world of donor conception.

Family Relationships

In the spirit of her blockbuster #1 New York Times bestseller The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin embarks on a new project to make home a happier place.

One Sunday afternoon, as she unloaded the dishwasher, Gretchen Rubin felt hit by a wave of homesickness. Homesick—why? She was standing right in her own kitchen. She felt homesick, she realized, with love for home itself. “Of all the elements of a happy life,” she thought, “my home is the most important.” In a flash, she decided to undertake a new happiness project, and this time, to focus on home.

And what did she want from her home? A place that calmed her, and energized her. A place that, by making her feel safe, would free her to take risks. Also, while Rubin wanted to be happier at home, she wanted to appreciate how much happiness was there already.

So, starting in September (the new January), Rubin dedicated a school year—September through May—to making her home a place of greater simplicity, comfort, and love.

In The Happiness Project, she worked out general theories of happiness. Here she goes deeper on factors that matter for home, such as possessions, marriage, time, and parenthood. How can she control the cubicle in her pocket? How might she spotlight her family’s treasured possessions? And it really was time to replace that dud toaster.

Each month, Rubin tackles a different theme as she experiments with concrete, manageable resolutions—and this time, she coaxes her family to try some resolutions, as well.

With her signature blend of memoir, science, philosophy, and experimentation, Rubin’s passion for her subject jumps off the page, and reading just a few chapters of this book will inspire readers to find more happiness in their own lives.
